Le pays de la teranga

Why Senegal

Senegal is where French teachers meet teranga — the hospitality the country is known for — through encounters that go far beyond typical tourism. Programs run from the artistic coastal village of Toubab Dialaw to the historical resonance of Gorée Island and the energy of Dakar, and north to Saint-Louis, the UNESCO World Heritage city that was once the capital of French West Africa.

  • Immerse yourself in Senegal’s diverse cultural landscape — languages, religions, ethnicities, cuisine and daily life
  • Prioritise authentic one-to-one and small-group interactions with students, teachers, artists, artisans and local families
  • Engage in hands-on workshops like batik-making and djembé drumming while learning about Senegalese artistic and oral traditions
  • Visit schools, universities, bookstores and markets to gain deeper insight into local life and Senegalese communities
  • Practise your French in real-world settings — everyone is encouraged to speak French 100% of the time, with a little Wolof added for fun

In Saint-Louis you cross the Pont Faidherbe, a 500-metre metallic bridge designed by a colleague of Gustave Eiffel and sometimes called “the horizontal Eiffel Tower”. Further north, programs reach the heart of rural life in Donaye and Podor. Expect to return energised, inspired and ready to share Senegal’s magic with your students.
